The difference a week (and a whole lot of medicine) can make! * side bar * who was I sending these glamorous hospital selfies to?! 😅

I know I can have a flair for the dramatics so I’ll try and reign this one in… I went to the hospital in the middle of the night knowing I was very sick, but wasn’t quite prepared for just *how* sick. It was startling and scary to hear I was septic and had failing kidneys. I am SO much better and hope to be totally a-okay with no long term issues. Yay yay yay! Still loads of follow ups and need to get my body back in order, but I’m on the journey.

One thing that I keep coming back to is just how well loved I am. When I was in the hospital, my thoughts vacillated between a very real fear for my health, and a feeling of total safety and security. I think that’s really accurate with how I feel in my personal life right now too. I know life will work out and be okay, but some days it really feels like I might not make it through.

The biggest measure of wealth though, is how many people you have in your corner. My bank account may be dry at this point 💸😅, but your girl is WEALTHY. I have been loved sooooo incredibly well. So many prayers and well wishes, meals and groceries, my lawn has been mowed by a neighbor I’ve never met before, my other neighbor did my dishes and cleared out my fridge, my parents flew out to help with my house and the kids, my colleagues took everything off my plate with no hesitation, my bestie came over and cleaned up my laundry from when I was sick-sick-sick without batting an eye…

You do get what you put into the world, sure, and I hope that I am a person who loves my people well. But also, sometimes you get a whole heck of a lot more than you deserve, and this is a prime example of that. Thank you so much to so many of you who messaged me with such kindness and told me you were praying for me. I will be forever thankful!

Remember to go love your people!! It matters. 🖤

Been a hard and scary week for me. Too much to share and yall probably don’t need all the info, but after battling the worst stomach flu of my life for three days, I finally got up the energy and nerve to call the ambulance at 2 AM Friday. They scooped me up and told me I was septic.
Immediately they put me on an IV drip, and I’ve been here ever since, fighting a gnarly kidney infection with near-failing kidney levels.
I’ve been on oxygen for the past 36 hours having the hardest time breathing deeper than a centimeter or two.

Turns out the vomiting and severe dehydration were alarm bells that my kidneys were shutting down.

I knew with almost near certainty that my body was going to shut down at some point due to the very high cortisol levels and high-high life stress I’m battling, I just, of course, didn’t think it would come this way.

The fear I have is calmed when I remember everyone on my care team is working on my behalf, and also knowing this just isn’t the thing that’s going to take your girl out. 😅 We’ve got too much living and loving and reclaiming to do!

I’ve had a few beloveds who have loved me with such intimacy and generosity. It feels very safe and good to be loved well. I know that sentence sounds real corny but there’s also really no other way to describe it. Real love feels so sacred (also- hint hint- it’s easy!!)

Still hospital trapped but that feels best to me. More to come and then back home to heal and rest with my three. All the nurses keep telling me to “enjoy the vacation!” And I can’t help but like… want to puke all over again. 😅 I appreciate a night away but next time I’d like to *specifically request* The Four Seasons with the corner view since I obviously didn’t make it clear this go around.

Super appreciate your prayers and kindness. Instead of letting myself get stuck in the plague of worries (💸🩻🩺) I’m just going to suck on my ice chips and sleeeeeeep. xo katy

This strange thing happens when grief upends and capsizes your life. It’s exhausting. All consuming. You can’t breathe, can’t think, can’t move, can hardly imagine how the hell you’ll get through this season of life… it feels like it will absolutely never, ever, ever end. I either forget to eat each day, or the only thing I can remember to do, is eat. One day I forgot to pick up my kids from school. The amount of mistakes I’ve made at work is staggering, and the amount of time I’ve spent talking about *myself* to my people is astronomical. It’s this weird, consuming pain that gobbles you up whole and refuses to spit you out and takes your creativity with it.

And then….One day, you wake up. Your eyes open and they don’t sting from the tears. And you realize… slowly, surely, completely, that you’re fine. You’re actually totally, absolutely fine. You see the people lining up to love you. You see that your kids still believe you hung the moon. You see that you’re still creative, still capable, still lovely, still breathing, still have joy flowing through your lungs and pulsing in your veins. The stranger named “Grief” might have swallowed you up for a second, but he didn’t win. He didn’t get the final say.

If you’re in the messy middle and you don’t think it will end, I am here to tell you, it will. You don’t have to trust me. I wouldn’t have trusted me. But the sun will rise again, I promise, and your cute little self will prevail. So stockpile your joy. Fill your world with people who love you and believe in you and hope the best for you. Get rid of the others. Spread your kindness like confetti. Turn on the 80s hits, cook some pasta, and get after it. One day at a time, baby cakes.

GUAC + GARLIC CHICKEN WRAPPPPAROONIE

A play on my Caesar salad dressing, I omitted the anchovy and doubled the garlic. The result is a velvety, punchy dressing that will have you begging for more. 🤤😮‍💨

I tossed a few chicken tenderloins in salt, pepper, garlic and onion powder with a shake of parsley. Grilled those babies up and chopped them fine with the romaine. I piled the salad mixture on a layer of fresh guac and the result was the best lunch I’ve made in awhile! Enjoy!!

I’m too tired to come up with resolutions, let alone even a word for the year. So here are some ideas that are rolling around in my mind…

Trust. Release. Relinquish. Adjust. Pivot. Rest. Breathe.

I often joke that I’m the old stump in “The Giving Tree” - I’ve given away all I have 😅

But I think - I think… this is the meaning of life. Pour ourselves out for the ones we love over and over and over until we get to where we need to be.

I love you wonderful friends. Thank you for being here with me! And thank you to those of you who have poured out your love for ME so much this year. ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

FIVE food-forward Christmas gifts to share this year!

I know social media is a weird place where we often see only the good and splashy and pretty and fun. My vulnerability is my superpower, though, so it’s probably time to let y’all into the sacred bones of my heart and life. My family looks different than it used to, and it’s been a long, long journey to get to this point. And we’ve been hanging here for quite a while now.

There were a lot of tears and a lot of grief and a lot of sleepless nights… But I rest deeply now and I smile with ease.

My kids are my heartbeat. How am I worthy of being their mom?! I’m not, and then again, I’m the only one who could fill this important role.
So what do we do when the going gets rough? Love a little more. Snuggle always. I sit with my kids in the hard moments, assure them that they are safe and adored and deeply loved by the two of us, and that nothing can change that.

Today has been a new type of day. I am holding on to all the traditions that matter to me and will hopefully one day matter to my crew, and we are enjoying the gorgeous Carolina sun while I fill our home with the smells of a Thanksgiving feast. Love grows in little houses like mine. The kitchen is a sacred space and I’m enjoying every minute today, sneaking bites of all the foods I’m creating, sipping on an aperol spritz, and telling my kids to PLEASE STOP BREAKING EVERYTHINGGGGGG. But then again. Whatever. The little stuff falls to the side and I’ll just keep working on keeping the main thing the main thing. 🩷

SAVE this recipe for a quick dinner side

Slice carrots in half.
Drizzle olive oil on a sheet pan, then coat with a layer of grated Parmesan.
Add carrots face down.
Cover the carrots with a couple teaspoons of balsamic vinegar, a drizzle of olive oil and hot honey.
Sprinkle on salt, pepper and garlic powder.

Roast at 400 for 20 minutes. Top with additional Parmesan cheese and broil for one minute until crispy.
